Kids’ TV Viewing Shapes Eating Habits Years Later

Kids who watch more TV eat junkier food as they grow older.

Does TV make you fat? There’s a growing body of evidence connecting more TV watching with poorer diets.

The latest study in the field has found that kids who watch more TV than their peers while in middle and high school have less healthy diets five years later. As young adults, they eat more fried foods, fast food and sugary drinks and consume fewer vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

“We can’t say we know the specific mechanism linking TV and diets, but we see this relationship,” says Dahlia Barr-Anderson, lead researcher of the study and a scientist at University of Minnesota’s School of Kinesiology. (Kinesiology is the study of human movement.)

Barr-Anderson offers some common-sense explanations for the TV-diet connection. She says that many snack and soda advertisements are aimed at children and can influence their food choices. Plus, many lifelong behaviors are formed in adolescent years, including the preference for snacking while watching TV.

American adolescents are a noticeable part of the national obesity boom. In the mid-1960s, fewer than 5% of 12-19 year old were overweight. Today, some 17% are overweight and another 17% are obese.

Harvard researchers have previously found that that for each hour of TV viewing, kids consume an extra 167 calories a day, largely because they eat more junk food and fewer fruit and vegetables, Barr-Anderson tells the Health Blog. Separately, research from the University of Missouri-Columbia suggests that eating family meals and cutting down on TV viewing can help keep kids from becoming overweight.

The latest study is based on a survey of 2,000 middle and high school children in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. Unlike many previous analyzes on TV and diets that compared subjects’ behavior at the same point in time, the latest effort tracks behavior in two separate periods. It appears in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.

Other Health Blogs

In health class, we had to look at five health related blogs and grade them using the way the teachers are grading our blogs.

The first blog I looked at was called "Chicago Hospital Systems Agrees to Boost Care for Poor, Uninsured". It was published by Sarah Rubenstein. The blog talked Advocate Health Care hospital in Chicago agreeing to give charity help to patients that earned 400% of the federal poverty level. It also said that the Resurrection Health Care hospital in Chicago will give a 25% discount to uninsured patients.
I gave this blog a five because it had complete sentences, talked about health and it had a connection to what we are studying.

The second blog I looked at was called "Cosy World of Cancer-Drug Compendia Draws Questions". It was published by David Armstrong. This blog says that lists of drug using will help in finding out if Medicare has to pay for medicine that they perscribed in a way the FDA didn't approve. It says that the American Hospital Formulary Service and the Foundation for Evidence-Based Medicine will make drug makers $50,000 for every off-label drug they make. I gave this a four because I couldn't understand some of what he was saying.

The third blog I found was called "Kids TV Viewing Shapes Eating Habits Years Later". It was published by Gautam Naik. Gautam was talking about how kids that watch too much TV will eat more unhealthy foods later in life. The blog says that in the 1960s less than 5% of people ages 12-19 were overweight. Today 17% are overweight or obese. I give this a five because Guatam described this in a clear way.

The next one I found was called "Mold and Roaches Found in Peanut Butter Linked to Salmonella". It was written by Sarah Rubenstein. Sarah said that the salmonella that came from peanut butter made in a factory was caused by mold and roaches from that got into the jars. The company didn't throw out the bad jars, and now all of there products that have been made since January 1, 2007 has been recalled. I gave this a five because everything was explained very well.

The last blog I found was called "Tell Your Mom-Game Testing Is A Serious Job". It didn't say who posted the blog. It says that people don't think testing video games isn't a serious job, but it actually is. They have to test new games from start to finish. They have to find every bug and make a note of it and tell the makers. I gave it a five because the blog explained everything in a way I can understand.

Brainstorming on Violence

I read an article the other day that classified the reasoning for teen violence into 6 different categories. What are some possible reasons you can think of concerning why violence continues in our society today? Why do people "choose" violence? Do you think it is a choice?

Leave a comment with your thoughts.

Follow Up Questions: Brian

Following Brian's visit last week, Blake had a question:
  • According to some data from PayScale, Inc., workers in the gaming industry who worked 10-19 years in the industry made less than those in 5-9 years. Why might that be?
